The KTP laser used at Clinica Jóia is a great choice to reduce facial and nasal telangiectasias (spider veins).
KTP stands for potassium titanyl-phosphate. The KTP laser works by selectively targeting irregular spots on the skin. Specifically, the laser targets red (hemoglobin) and brown (melanin) areas on the skin. While treating redness on the skin, the energy of the KTP laser gently coagulates the blood vessels below the skin’s surface. This collapses those visible blood vessels and decreases the generalized redness seen in rosacea.
What to Expect During a KTP Laser Treatment
Treatment with the KTP laser does not take long; the length of the treatment depends on the area being treated. Depending on what you are treating, you may have gel applied to your skin. The treatment itself is not painful and you will be ready to go immediately after the treatment. There is no “down-time” and you will feel fine immediately following the treatment.
Treatments are quick and precise, with essentially no downtime. The vessels disappear immediately at the time of treatment. After treatment, there can be some microcrusting of the skin which is minimal. Vessels do tend to recanalize (they fill back up, and do this with any laser treatment) and require usually a series of 3 treatments for complete and long lasting clearance.
In contrast to pulsed-dye laser, there is less purpura (bruising) with the KTP laser. We have seen great results, and this is one of the laser treatments that our patients are most satisfied with.
